The Nagar Panchayat Hamirpur was established in 1965, and it was upgraded to a Municipal Council in 1974. The council was headed by an elected chairperson, and an executive officer was appointed for administrative functions. Subsequently, on December 23, 2024, the Government of Himachal Pradesh, through a notification, upgraded the Municipal Council to Municipal Corporation. According to this notification, 94 villages and 14 panchayats were included in the Hamirpur Municipal Corporation, increasing its area from 5.24 square kilometres to 42.04 square kilometers. As per the census 2011, the population increased to approximately 43,055, and the number of wards also increased from 11 to 15. Currently, since elections for the Hamirpur Municipal Corporation have not been held, an elected body has not been formed. The Commissioner, appointed by the government, is the administrative head.
